The Higgins Biography
The Higgins are one of Canada’s most distinctive and beloved country-folk groups, known for their rich three-part harmonies, acoustic musicianship, and heartfelt songwriting rooted in family and tradition. Comprised of sisters Brianne, Carolyn, and Patty Higgins, the trio was raised in the small farming community of Woodhams, Ontario, where music was a central part of daily life. From an early age, the sisters sang together at church, family gatherings, and local events, developing a natural blend that would later become their signature sound.
The Higgins gained national attention in the 1990s as part of a wave of Canadian artists bringing authenticity and roots-based storytelling back to country music. Their style drew from classic country, folk, and Celtic influences, creating a sound that felt both timeless and contemporary. Audiences were drawn not only to their harmonies but also to their warmth on stage and the sincerity of their performances.
The group released several well-received albums that showcased their songwriting strength and vocal interplay. Songs such as “Heaven Can Wait,” “Lights of Love,” and “Someday Soon” highlighted their ability to tell deeply personal stories while remaining universally relatable. Their recordings earned airplay across Canada and helped establish them as respected performers within the country music community.
The Higgins were also widely known for their live performances, which emphasized connection, musicianship, and storytelling. Whether performing at intimate theatres or major outdoor festivals, the trio brought a sense of closeness to every show, often sharing stories about family, faith, and life on the land between songs.
That spirit resonated strongly with audiences at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival, where The Higgins performed in 1998. Appearing during one of the festival’s most vibrant eras, they were a natural fit for Merritt’s celebration of country music and community. Their harmonies and acoustic sound offered festival-goers a heartfelt contrast to larger, high-energy acts, and their performance left a lasting impression on fans who appreciated music that came straight from the heart.
Beyond their success as a group, the Higgins sisters have continued to influence Canadian music through songwriting, solo projects, and mentoring, while remaining closely connected to their roots. Their legacy is one of family, harmony, and authenticity — values that align perfectly with the spirit of the Merritt Mountain Music Festival and its enduring place in Canadian country music history.
